Nika Roza Danilova, otherwise known as Zola Jesus has taken the veil off her sparkling new video for ‘Hunger’ taken off her highly acclaimed album TAIGA released in October last year.
The song itself has quite a cinematic quality about it. Suiting of a James Bond chase scene the instrumental has a marching band-esqe hip hop drum groove remittent of Kanye West‘s 2010 masterpiece. Danilova‘s vocal is powerful and cuts through the heavy production with ease. With pop music going how it has for artists such as Sia, Lorde and FKA Twigs there is potential for mainstream/indie crossover with this track.
The video itself is a concept in itself, director Allie Avital Tsypin explained by saying
“The video for ‘Hunger’ is essentially a sculpture project… an exploration of a life form: both raw and refined. A negotiation between form and inner life, movement and stillness, desire and satiation. Working with Nika is always an honest and satisfying collaboration… it was really fun to interpret the song and Nika’s aesthetic sensibilities through film.”
TAIGA is currently available via MUTE.
