Brunswick’s Mechanics Institute is ready to come alive with performance, interaction, and live art pieces upon the announcement of Metanoia 2015 – Live Works Program.
Beginning Tuesday April 28, artist-led company Metanoia Theatre will present four performance works across a two-month program, which will inhabit every nook and cranny of the historic Brunswick building.
The program will open with an intimate performance work by Hallie Shellam, as she transforms the Institute’s small office into an interrogation room. Is This Somewhere You’ve Been Before? is a mock investigation into the whereabouts of a missing person, in which Shellam grills her audience members in one-on-one interrogation and phony forensic interviews. As the six-day performance piece continues, so does the audience interaction, as Shellam begins to re-enact scenes that never happened, from the information gathered by her audience contributors.
The Institute will also transform into a live film set with Melbourne’s MKA: Theatre of New Writing. The Theatre Company will hold host to the shooting a fictional film clip, titled EXPEN$$$IVE, whereby viewers can partake in the shoot and find out more about the clip at the event’s fake press conference.
In the Institute’s studio space will reside an experiential collaborative piece between 2014 VCA Scholarship recipient and theatre director – Iris Gallard, and dramatic artist and writer – Georgia Symons. In The Dark will take audience members through a spiritual self-discovery of faith and decision-making, in the spectacular mystery world created by the artists.
Finally, to draw the program to a close, will be a sensory overload of installation and performance when ten artists, curated by Metanoia, come together in 10CS, an all-encompassing performance piece which aims to review the Ten Commandments in a contemporary light.
