It’s been a huge year so far for experimental pop group RACKETT. The Sydney four-piece have spent the last six months appearing at Secret Garden Festival, The Blurst of Times, Mountain Sounds Festival, and Electric Lady, opening for for UK rock band The Darkness on their Australian tour, and selling out the launch for their second single ‘Ready or Not’.
And if that wasn’t enough, they’ve just dropped a striking new single called ‘Prey’. Digressing from their pop punk sound and adopting a neo-psychadelia shoegaze feel, ‘Prey’ is no less assertive than the group’s previous two singles, and anything but pared back. Written at Sydney’s Newtown library and produced by Dave Hammer, this is the third single to drop from RACKETT’s debut EP ‘Ready or Not’. The track’s lighthearted, summery vibe is counterbalanced by its sharp lyrics and eccentric film clip.
The video, which juxtaposes gentle hues and retro furnishings with defiant gestures, represents RACKETT’s notoriously skilful combination of an assertive punk base with fresh pop flavours.
Infusing conventionally feminine rituals with bizarre and surreal imagery, the clip succeeds in subverting the stereotypical placidity of the household dinner party.
Sonically and visually, RACKETT are challenging norms and contending that warmth and gentleness are not exclusive from edgy, gritty dynamism. The compelling video, as well as their feature as the face of General Pants fall/winter collection this year exemplify their magnetism across the board.
Since forming at the beginning of 2016, RACKETT have been on a steady upward trajectory: building up their repertoire with live shows and transforming from an unknown experimental group into a high-octane, fiery and accomplished act in their own right.
The band’s success so far – coupled with their undaunted talent and skill – portends a bright future as they prepare to drop their debut EP ‘Ready or Not’ later this year.
