Currently touring with Dune Rats, DZ Deathrays have been mates with them for years, before they were even known as Dune Rats, “and have toured in Australia together a few times already dating back to 2009.” Currently on their appropriately named International Disaster Tour, we asked who the genius behind the poster artwork is – “That was Dunies friend Lee McConnell who does a bunch of their art who made that. We made it into a banner for the whole tour and it’s been really great to tie the show together as an event each night.”

If you’re seen either of the groups live before, you’ll know that they both bring a certain kind of energy. Asking if there’s any light-hearted competition as to who can put on the wildest show each night, Deathrays heartily agreed – “but I think each our sets are different which makes it a good pairing to take overseas.” The duo went on to praise Dune Rats for having their banter down pat, always making “for a really fun show no matter how many people are there.” But having too much fun can often have consequences – with DZ Deathrays pleading with fans three months ago to pray for their general health during the tour.

Starting to sink in that we are going on tour through Europe, the U.K. USA and Canada with DUNE RATS.

Pray for our general health.

Luckily, there’s only been one trip to the doctor, appropriately because their “main man behind the merch desk Wes was partied out and checked himself in for a bit of a recovery.” Other than that, DZ Deathrays revealed that the wildest thing that’s happened was that Lachlan has only had 2 beers the whole tour.” Oh yeah, and they managed to get their bus (which they refer to as “the golden nugget”) stuck on Sunset Boulevard… Speaking of the incident, Deathrays revealed that it was simply due to the driver going down a road that was “way too small and steep… Turns out a tow ball can cut through the road.”

Day 2 of tour: Got our tour bus stuck on Sunset Blvd.
Playing at the Echo in LA tonight! Playing Santa Anna tomorrow.

DZ Deathrays are set to return to Aussie shores for Beyond The Valley as well as their upcoming Pollyanna tour with support from the incredible Ecca Vandal. Having been fans of Ecca Vandal for a while, and being especially blown away by a live set in Perth, DZ Deathrays “just really love that they are making music a bit different to everything else out at the moment and they are awesome live.” Both acts got people talking at BIGSOUND earlier this year thanks to their epic collaboration/cover of Sabotage by Beastie Boys, getting our fingers and toes crossed for a performance of it on the Pollyanna tour. DZ Deathrays revealed that although the performance was a lot of fun, they don’t have anything planned just yet – “Gotta survive this tour we are on right now first.”

Other than the Pollyanna tour, DZ Deathrays are set to play Beyond The Valley amongst other festivals over the New Years period so we asked them how they cool off on those hot summer days to which they eagerly responded “cocktails and towels.” Which is appropriate considering their favourite thing about touring regionally is “Drive Through Bottleo’s.”
