This little piggie went to market, this little piggie went to town and painted the whole fucking thing red. Dank and whimsical, Gary is the impulsive and unafraid creature of Mangelwurzel; a ten-track debut that folds between punk and neo-soul without consideration. Chaotic in its arrangements, each track solidifies itself as effortlessly zany, bouncing and jittering across the expanding energy of Cosima Jaala’s bubbly melancholy. Noted for her “quirky charisma” with a tendency on “dropping [the] sardonic” by Rolling Stone Australia, Jaala has not only hallmarked her silver-tongued in Gary, but also profusely championed song-banter into the warning zone.
From its early beginnings, Gary swirls amongst aching vocals and brass arrangements in earlier released ‘Fishy Fry’ and key-bashing ‘Hawaii’. Making off like hooligans, the six-piece suddenly change gears as they hit their getaway in ‘Everybody’s Friend’. Sliding in with a “mouth like a thug“, the track crashes and ebbs as instrumentals blare and bleed into a one-hit K.O as Jaala howls, “You just can’t be everybody’s friend!”
As Zan Rowe once commented, “Describing them would take longer than actually listening to them” and for the most of Gary, this is entirely true. Forcing colourful daggers into Melbourne’s neo-soul scene, moments reminiscent of Hiatus Kaiyote are met with deafening screams – a hasty and vigorous release that hit you right between your eyes – pacing back and forth as what can only be described as crazy. ‘Baby Pie’ is the christening of this sensation and by far a standout track; clashing in and out of consciousness with guitar licks, horns and one giggle-worthy line worthy for the wait.
Recorded with Liam Barton at The Bank, mixed by Stu Mackenzie (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard) and mastered by Mikey Young, the album, and their live shows are guaranteed to give you head rush with their messy mixes of jazz, punk, pop, psychedelic rock and a little bit of everything in between.
