Brazilian singer/songwriter SEU JORGE brings his vibrant Latin American music straight from the heart of Rio de Janeiro to Australia for his debut visit this January. Here for the Sydney Festival, Jorge will play one headline show at the Forum in Melbourne on January 13.

Jorge’s performance in Wes Anderson’s  The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou in 2004 brought the artist to the attention of David Bowie. Playing a sailor who sang solo acoustic versions of David Bowie classics in Portuguese caused Bowie to remark, “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs acoustically in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.”

Of course, there has been a wealth of Seu Jorge original composition. Jorge, who grew up in Brazil’s favelas is a rare talent, having taught himself to play guitar as well as many other instruments. His warm husky baritone is instantly recognizable, but nonetheless flexible enough for samba, reggae, pop, electronic and other influences that find their way into his music.

Jorge has collaborated with artists such as Beck, Talib Kweli, Jack Johnson, Damien Rice and Thievery Corporation as well as Brazilians Sergio Mendes, Bebel Gilberto, Marisa Monte, Badi Assad and Ana Carolina, with whom he recorded a classic live album with in 2005. He’s also worked with members of the legendary Nação Zumbi on a project called Almaz, which was released as the album Seu Jorge and Almaz in 2010.

With new music scheduled for release in the near future and high profile appearances abroad, it’s safe to say that Seu Jorge will once again be at the forefront of the global cultural conversation, making 2015 another banner year for him. Don’t miss his intimate show at The Forum in January.
