Melbourne folk-pop quintet Playwrite are ready to share with the world their debut album Cathedrals. In celebration of the release Playwrite will launch Cathedrals at The Abbotsford Convent’s Shadow Electric Bandroom on Friday, November 27.
Three years in the making, the eleven-track record is incredibly diverse and powerful and showcases the band’s evolution over the past five years of working together. Most of the songwriting is drawn from dealing with loss and grief as lead guitarist Patrick Holcombe’s parents passed away defending their home in the Black Saturday bushfires.
Playwrite have a wonderful way of navigating through the darkness with illuminating qualities that never let the listener get too down. The latest single from Cathedrals is ‘Black Cloud’ and was written in the wake of the Fukushima Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster in 2011. Lead singer Jordan White’s transfixing vocals express the helplessness felt when observing the suffering of strangers and loved ones out of reach. Beautifully delivered it’s a tale that most can empathise with creating a bond between the audience and the band.
