Sydney-Siders Betty & Oswald recently embarked on a national Australian tour in support of their latest single ‘King of Bohemia’, so we thought we would find out what goes on in the tour van when they’re on the road.
We listen to a bunch of music. We take turns in DJing until we get sick of everything we know and that’s when we start getting into some real weird music. We read, write, make videos. There was also a lot of in car dance parties on this tour. And cards, Claudia is great at sharking people. She plays the innocent and airy angle so well but secretly she’s counting cards and scheming you out of a drink or your car.
Movies/TV shows: What are you watching?
We actually don’t watch a lot of things. I think it’s a slippery slope and we’re a little scared of how unproductive we’d be if we got into a habit of it! But I did watch Birdman on a plane recently and that was pretty rad.
Music: What are you listening to?
Patrick Watson’s new album! Father John Misty, The War On Drugs, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Leif Vollebekk, Tom Waits, Mac Demarco, Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile, Half Moon Run, Peter Bibby, Richard In Your Mind, Foxygen, Neil Young, Hiatus Kaiyote, Bill Callahan, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Wild Belle. EVERYTHINGGGG.
Literature: What are you reading?
Claudia is reading Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins and Pete’s reading The Magus by John Fowles. They are both great.
Food: What are you eating?
We became secret breakfast fiends on this tour and ate breakfast out every morning. Uh, oh.. So we were basically playing gigs to fund our ridiculous breakfast habits. Best breakfast on tour was at The Beachhouse in Valla Beach, which was followed by a swim and a shameless mid morning VB.
Accommodation: Where are you sleeping?
Usually when there’s just two of us we sleep in the back of our plumbing van, but since there was five of us this time it probably would have stretched our friendships a little too much..
We actually got really lucky because there were a couple of gigs we rocked up to play and we hadn’t found any accommodation for the night, but we met people at the shows who were kind enough to put us up. One night we nearly slept five of us in our friend’s caravan but ended up in this amazing big house in Valla Beach.
Tour Comforts: What can’t you live without while on the road?
Pete needs his sunnies, Simon needs breakfast and Rosie needs her coffee. And her glasses. Ha.
Guilty Pleasure/s: What is your one guilty pleasure while touring?
Rollies and cheap nasty service station coffee (one of Pete’s favourite blends).
Images: What is your favourite tour photo or video?
