Legendary cosmologist and author Stephen Hawking has spent much of his life studying the stars. Earlier this week, however, the wheelchair-bound professor was surrounded by stars of a different kind, at London’s Leicester Square premiere of his biopic The Theory of Everything.
He made the unlikely appearance on the red carpet alongside his movie doppelgänger Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables, My Week with Marilyn) – who has been praised for his portrayal of the eminent scientist.
The film is based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, which was written by Hawking’s first wife Jane Hawking. Also attending the was Felicity Jones (Cheerful Weather for the Wedding, The Invisible Woman) who plays Jane, to whom Hawking was married for 26 years until their divorce in 1991.
The film looks back nostalgically to the couple’s days as young and loving Cambridge students in the early 60s, to when the then-cosmology undergraduate was first diagnosed with motor neurone disease, which went on to rob him of most physical movements.
Director James Marsh‘s film shows how their relationship evolved over subsequent years, as Hawking became world-renowned and admire his dazzling scientific intellect.
The Theory of Everything will be released in Australia on January 29th, 2015.
