Brisbane-based quintet Boatkeeper are back with their second EP VESSELS. This is the first outing for the group as a band, having previously been a solo project for lead singer Boyd Fuller. This new venture comes as a follow up to the successful 2017 EP Windward which enjoyed over 1 million plays on Spotify. Previously released singles ‘Shadows’, a slow folk-rock track and ‘Refugee’, a stronger more politically driven tune, feature on the new EP.
Starting off soft and measured with the song ‘Roam’, the EP takes you on a journey through n array of musical styles, showcasing the range and talent of the band. They explore a number of emotions and narratives through six diverse songs, exploring everything from political and foreign affairs to heartache and self-discovery closer to home.
As each member of Boatkeeper had a different influence on the songs, the band was careful not to pigeonhole themselves into one sound. The end result is a diverse range of songs from folk, roots, rock all the way to pop.
Having grown up in the small town of Mission Beach, costal sounds are woven into each song on the EP. It makes for a soulful, down-to-earth sound that will remind you of warm days and salt water. Boatkeeper hope that each listener will interpret the new EP in their own way, and hope they can see the influence each individual band member has had on the body of work.
