Fresh from a well-received performance at this years Byron Bay Bluesfest, 23 year old singer-songwriter Garrett Kato is on his way to big things. His latest single ‘Hipster Kids’ is a far cry from his folk releases. A haunting yet grungy vocal appears reverberating through a thickness of bass and spacious beats. ‘Hipster Kids’ questions an grown pop culture in mesmerising simplicity. “Those hipster kids all look the same” shoots sharp darts towards credibility and authenticity of a modern day hipster. Recorded at Kato’s Home studio, the self-produced single was mixed by Anthony Lycenko and masted by Grammy Award winning Vlado Meller at Masterdisk Studios (NYC). “I wanted to create something completely different to the work I normally do” Kato Says. “From the themes in the song, to the instrumentation and the tones of the recording, the goal was to get out of my comfort zone and subsequently reinvent my idea of songwriting.” Add a UK tour in September, with a spot at Isle of Wight’s BESTIVAL (alongside headliners Elton John, Snoop Dogg, The xx and MIA) and ambitious new single ‘Hipster Kids’, Kato is definitely one to keep an eye on…
Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J – 4/5 “This one’s great. A very ear-sticking chorus.”
