Under the Wire – Projections and Sounds, a new public event hosting a melting pot of exciting film and live music, is coming to the south-east for the first time ever this week. The program, presented in association with Monash University and Melbourne Festival, will showcase some of the best local and international creative talent for three nights, and it’s all free.

Curated by Head of Film Programs at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, James Hewison, it’s no surprise that Under the Wire is bringing the likes of Amiel Courtin-Wilson, one of Australia’s most prolific and radical filmmakers, Los Angeles’ Super 8mm master Rick Charnoski, as well as contemporary New York director Bill Morrison.

Accompanying the screenings will also be a bunch of up-and-coming musicians performing live for the public, including emerging electro-soul musician Alice Ivy. After supporting Banoffee and Remi, touring around the UK and Europe, and winning the Triple J Unearthed Listen Out Festival competition all in the last year, Alice Ivy is not one to miss.

Joining her is Saatsuma, who will be providing their hip hop, house and neo-soul hybrid tunes to Monash audiences. The Melbourne-based duo recently supported Yeo’s tour, was featured at Brisbane’s BIGSOUND, and have announced live shows for both Melbourne Music Week and Paradise Music Festival.

DJ MonaGene and ambient solo project OCDANTAR will follow up Alice Ivy and Saatsuma on stage, and a plethora of sound curation and composition will be exhibited too. Australian Art Orchestra’s Peter Knight, sound master James Savage, and live improvisations by Monash‘s own Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music will be also be featured at Under The Wire.

All the while, if you’re feeling like you want to treat yourself, popular eatery MJR TOM will be serving up delectable and sophisticated bites with boutique wines and cocktails from 5pm to 10pm daily. This is one unique Melbourne Festival program you do not want to miss.
