Melbourne Zoo Twilights are back with another huge lineup up of local and international artists. Ticket holders can enjoy a wander through the many exhibits before you settling down to a picnic and performances under the stars.

Perth veterans Jedediah will be coming east to grace the Zoo stage on Friday February 19 with support from Augie March frontman Glenn Richards.

To get you in the mood for a night at The Zoo, Jebediah drummer Brett Mitchell has selected his favourite animal related songs.

Mister Would You Please Help My Pony – Ween
This song is about a pony who’s lung is suspected to be somehow “fucked up” so it is potentially quite sad, except it’s not – it’s quite funny.  Ween are a special band and besides, the eventual outcome is never mentioned so I like to think the pony made a full recovery.  I would have tried to help his pony.

Werewolves of London – Warren Zevon
I like this a little bit less after Kid Rock crapped on about it being similar to Sweet Home Alabama and was inspired to put out that stupid song of his, and it’s not technically about a real animal but regardless, it’s still a classic.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight
I’m pretty sure a version of this was on my parent’s Harry Belafonte LP.  Cats do sleep a lot – that’s an actual animal fact, sort of.

Monkey Gone to Heaven – The Pixies
I never really understood what this song was about.  Luckily it would seem I don’t have to understand something to like it, which would be an awful prerequisite to have to deal with in life.

Karma Chameleon – Culture Club
This was on a cassette tape my grandmother sent from England for my birthday when I was a kid.  It’s a great pop song.  Chameleons are hardly ever referred to literally in music, this song being no exception.  They’re probably not considered sexy enough.  But it’s a valid reference nonetheless.
