The prestigious annual 87th Academy Awards wrapped up just minutes ago at The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, honouring the efforts and extravagance of the film industry’s leading heavyweights.

My personal favourite, Birdman, took flight with an impressive four awards, including major nods for cinematography, directing and Best Picture. The number of wins tied with kooky British flick The Grand Budapest Hotel, which scored music, production and costume awards (and made it a good night for Edward Norton who was lucky enough to star in both).

Most categories played as out as expected, with J.K Simmons and Patricia Arquette getting their supporting role gongs, and Julianne Moore taking out Best Actress for Still Alice.

And an extremely excited Eddie Redmayne of The Theory of Everything beat the likes of Michael Keaton (damn), Benedict Cumberbatch and Bradley Cooper to win the hotly contested Best Actor oscar for his turn as Professor Stephen Hawking.

Speeches were powerful and political this year, and host Neil Patrick Harris kept the mood light.
