The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) runs from September 4-14 this year, and is set to screen some serious Oscar contenders. Here are the Top Ten films to look out for…


The Imitation Game

Computing pioneer and Nazi code cracker Alan Turing and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II. Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode and Mark Strong.


The Judge

A successful lawyer returns to his hometown for his mother’s funeral only to discover that his estranged father, the town’s judge, is suspected of murder. Stars: Robert Downey Jr, Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga and Billy Bob Thornton.


The Face of an Angel

Based on the novel by Barbie Latza Nadeau, Michael Winterbottom’s psychological thriller is inspired by the real-life story of accused killer Amanda Knox and her very public trial. Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Cara Delevingue and Daniel Bruhl.


The Cobbler

Adam Sandler returns to more sophisticated storytelling, playing a lonely New York shoe repairman who discovers a family heirloom that magically lets him “walk in another man’s shoes” and see the world differently. Stars: Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi, Dan Stevens and Dustin Hoffman.



When a young British soldier is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the streets of Belfast, he must survive the night alone and find his way to safety through a disorientating, alien and deadly landscape. Stars: Jack O’Connell, Sean Harris and Charlie Murphy.


St. Vincent

A story about Maggie and her adopted 12-year-old son, Oliver, who move next door to war veteran Vincent. Before too long, Vincent introduces Oliver to his heinous lifestyle of gambling, drinking, and his relationship with a Russian prostitute. Stars: Bill Murray, Naomi Watts, Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd.


While We’re Young

An uptight documentary filmmaker and his wife find their lives loosened up a bit after befriending a free-spirited younger couple. Stars: Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried.



The “inspired by a true story” tale of Olympic Wrestling Champion brothers Mark Schultz and Dave Schultz, and their relationship with the eccentric John du Pont, heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune that led to murder. Stars: Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo.



A pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Paxton and Rene Russo.
