Crack open the Bolly, darling! It looks like Ab Fab the movie is well and truly on its way!
Jennifer Saunders has delighted Absolutely Fabulous fans by hinting that the long-awaited Absolutely Fabulous film could be in cinemas as early as this year.
Writing and starring in the original show, Saunders confirmed the eagerly-awaited film will be named Edina and Patsy, and that the final script is well underway.
“I’ve finished the first draft,” Saunders said. “I’m feeling euphoric. My proper New Year’s resolution is to do the film, otherwise it’ll be a pointless year of procrastination.”
The original series (which ran for five seasons between 1992 and 2003, plus specials), featured Saunders and Joanna Lumley as best-friends and tragic fashionistas Edina and Patsy. They were hard-drinking, drug-taking, outrageous and selfish middle-aged women bumbling through the cut-throat world of high-class fashion.
Apart from the leading ladies, the show regulars were Edina’s wacky mother Gran, conservative daughter, Saffron and hopeless assistant Bubble.
Known for its star-studded cameos, 22-year-old British model Cara Delevingne is said to be keen to secure a role in the upcoming film when given the go-ahead.
The power-brow supermodel is a huge fan of the TV sitcom, and wants to follow in the footsteps of fellow catwalk queens Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell by appearing in the big screen adaptation.
Saunders says she hopes to get all of the celebrities who appeared on Absolutely Fabulous to return, from Moss and Campbell to Helena Bonham-Carter, Idris Elba and Sir Elton John.
