Before The Conjuring comes the story of Annabelle, a creepy-as pigtailed doll possessed by a demon who threatens a young couple with a newborn baby. Terrified? You should be. Annabelle Wallis (I know? What an aptly named actress) and Ward Horton play Mia and John Gordon, a couple whose doll they bought for their young daughter begins to show signs of life. The Conjuring‘s cinematographer John R. Leonetti has created a horrific Chucky-esque prequel/spin-off. Based on well documented true events, this supernatural horror flick is sure to terrify all ages, and make a lot of families never look the same way again at the dolls in their collection…
Annabelle is out now at Hoyts cinemas.
The highly-anticpated film adaptation of the popular Gillian Flynn novel hit cinemas this week. The book and film chronicles the relationship of Nick and Amy Dunne (Argo‘s Ben Affleck and Die Another Day‘s Rosamund Pike), when on the day of the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary, Amy goes missing. Under pressure from the police and a bevy of intrusive media types, Nick’s account of a blissful marriage begins to crumble as the investigation gets underway, framing him as a suspect. Popular director David Fincher (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) has crafted a suspenseful thriller, with a strong cast and goose bump inducing diary-narration from Amy. The question remains: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife? You’ll have to go and see it to find out…
Gone Girl is out now via general release.
You know that guy who looks like Orlando Bloom? And a bit like Dominic Cooper? Yeah, that guy. Well he’s name is Luke Evans and he’s a vampire. For the purpose of this film, of course. Dracula Untold explores the origin of legendary gothic horror figure Dracula (Evans: The Three Musketeers). It weaves both vampire mythology and the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler, depicting Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war. Co-starring Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Samantha Barks (Les Miserables) and indeed Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia), the film is visually impressive, and uses kick-ass special effects and battle sequences in true fantasy style. Oh, and the trailer features Lorde’s ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ so it’s pretty epic!

Changing pace from the thriller genre films of this week is Advanced Style. This stylish, feel-good documentary follows the personal lives of some of New York City’s most fashionable older ladies. Street style photographer Ari Seth Cohen and director Lina Plioplyte have found a fun and dynamic dialogue with these catwalk-ready over 60s, as they dispel conventional ideas about beauty and ageing. The woman are such colourful characters, particularly 93 year old Ilona Royce Smithkin who features on the film’s official Australian poster. Although she may look like Judi Dench in drag in her still, the film is anything but a piss-take, as both the filmmakers and the women prove that with age comes grace, confidence, flair and new and exciting opportunities for fame and fortune.
Advanced Style is out now at Cinema Nova and Palace Cinemas.
