The ’90s hip hop-driven soundtrack for one of the most buzzed-about films of the season, the nerds-in-the-hood movie Dope, will be available to buy this Friday June 19.

Curated by Grammy winning artist and producer Pharrell Williams, music and movie fans are eagerly anticipating the acclaimed film’s August 20 Australian theatrical release and the soundtrack’s official release next week.

The kickoff song from the album, ‘Don’t Get Deleted’ – served up in the film by the three main characters of the movie ala their band Awreeoh – will be offered to fans who pre-order the soundtrack. Williams executive produced the movie in addition to writing and producing all tracks from Awreeoh.

Hailed as “vibrant and entertaining…sharp and smart…” by the Hollywood Reporter, the comedy-drama made its January debut at the Sundance Film Festival acclaimed as an audience favourite and received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival last month.

Dope is currently one of the many highlights of the Sydney Film Festival due to its fresh, exuberant, inspiring and laugh-out-loud funny style.

It was written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa (The Wood, Brown Sugar) and stars Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons, Blake Anderson, Zoë Kravitz, A$AP Rocky and others. Along with Williams’ involvement, the film was produced by actor Forest Whitaker and co-executive produced by singer Sean Combs.

The film follows a nerdy trio of South Los Angeles high schoolers obsessed with ‘90s hip hop culture – played by Revolori, Clemons, and newcomer Moore in the lead role as Malcolm – surviving life in their tough neighborhood while juggling college applications, academics and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads Malcolm and his friends into an adventure – that if they persevere – could allow Malcolm to go from being a geek to dope, and ultimately being himself.
