Earlier this week, director Paul Feig and writer Katie Dippold took to Twitter to announce the leading ladies of the upcoming Ghostbusters film.

After months of speculation and predictions – most of which seem to have been proven right – Bridesmaids buddies Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, and Saturday Night Live stars Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon were the first faces to be officially linked to the pending all-female star cast.

The decision to go almost exclusively female was confirmed late last year by The Heat‘s Feig, with the hope of capitalising on the strong fan-base already established by the SNL regulars and open up the franchise to newer and younger audiences who maybe couldn’t relate to the Dan Ackroyd/Bill Murray 80s original.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, only McCarthy has officially signed on to the re-boot, while the other three funnies are in the final stage of negotiations, but Feig’s tweet of the four actresses makes it almost certainly look like a done deal.

Other actresses rumoured to have been associated with the project over the years have included Rebel Wilson, Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence.

Whatever the official cast pans out to be, the third Ghostbusters film looks well and truly underway, with Feig also tweeting: “In other news, #Ghostbusters will be hitting theaters July 22, 2016. Save the date!”
