Panda Bear has just premiered his heartwarming and trippy new video for the second single off his latest album Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper, ‘Boys Latin’.
Directed by Isaiah Saxon and Sean Hellfritsch (the masterminds behind Bjork’s ‘Wanderlust’ and Grizzly Bear’s ‘Knife’) in their San Francisco-based studio, Encyclopedia Pictura, the clip is a splendid, almost hypnotic video sequence, set in an animated alternate universe of rolling blue hills and desolate marshland. A young woman is hiking through the wetlands and stumbles upon an alluring sea anemone. After touching it she suffers a warped bodily reaction that sees 3D shapes sprouting and contorting out of her uncontrollably. The woman stumbles upon a man in a similar predicament, the two form a sweet bond over the experience.
To explain the hallucinatory, symbolism-laden clip, Director Isaiah Saxon said: ‘We tried hard to bring out the vibe of that alternating melody that Noah is singing. We wondered what that should look and feel like from a synesthesia perspective. We’ve always believed that shapes and forms themselves have emotional meaning. For example, round things are often cute and non-threatening, while spiky things usually seem dangerous. We ran with that idea by creating these dynamic forms that grow out of our characters as they deal with their emotions.’
Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper, the fifth studio album from Animal Collective founding member/solo artist Noah Lennox, aka Panda Bear, will be released on Friday January 9 through EMI Music.
