As one of the driving forces behind WA music and arts collective The Community, songwriter, producer, poet and performer Mathas has finally began garnering national attention over the last two years for his solo efforts.

As of this week, Mathas has signed up with Sydney-based label Big Village Records. The company is already home to some of Australia’s most forward-thinking hip-hop artists including Loose Change and Daily Meds & Suburban Dark, and boasts a plump roster of characters with their own unique, progressive aesthetic.

Along with the Big Village announcement, Mathas has released the fan-made music video for his current single ‘Free Shit’, which is essentially a lyrical journey through the minefield of modern consumerism and its role in a child’s upbringing. The clever little clip was created by local Perth VJ Tristan Garner (aka COMBS) by weaving together old, public domain, black & white advertising from the 1940-50s in his own spare time.

Mathas will also play Bigsound in Brisbane next month on the triple j Unearthed Stage.

Mathas’ highly anticipated sophomore LP Armwrestling Atlas via Big Village Records & The Community Records in October.

‘Free Shit’ is available now online from iTunes & streaming services through MGM Distribution. Watch the creative clip below:
