When you first hear Japanese Wallpaper, it is hard to believe that he is still in high school. The youngsters sound is refined and sophisticated, showing that the multi-instrumentalist is one talented 17 year old. He has been spruiked by Chet Faker, Gotye and Bombay Bicycle Club, and now is the winner of triple j’s Unearthed High competition. Out of many entrants from all across the nation, Japanese Wallpaper (Gab Strum) was chosen, and like many artists before him, Strum has long be practicing and experimenting with his songs, their structures and his own musical style.

Strum has been uploading his songs to triple j Unearthed since he was 14 years old. Over this time he has continued to hone his craft and develop dreamy soundscape wonders. He is one of those artists that lives and breathes music and people have appreciated his work and the breadth of his musical ability. His latest track “Breathe In (ft.Wafia)” was heard by Hollywood actor/director Zach Braff. Braff then went on to feature the song in his latest film “Wish I Was Here”. The song was also featured on hit TV show Offspring.

Japanese Wallpaper is a Melbourne local. The year 11 student from Leibler Yavneh College sings, plays a range of instruments and produces. Combining these mediums he makes delicate pop infused tunes. There are lots of layers and sound particles floating through his songs. Often he creates wistful and drifting pieces of music; tranquil and smooth listening.

triple j Unearthed music Director, Dave Ruby Howe said:

“It kills me that he’s only 17 and has such control of his sound. He’s an overachieving superstar and he richly deserves the crown as the winner of Unearthed High 2014.”

Strum will record a new track at the triple j studios. This will receive airplay on both triple j and triple j Unearthed. He will be the coolest kid on the block, playing alongside Seth Sentry at a concert put on at his school. Thereafter, it will be interesting to see what Japanese Wallpaper will come up with next.
