SBS have confirmed that Australian chart-topper Guy Sebastian will be our wildcard contestant in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna in May.
The Australian Idol winning pop star said he would be performing an epic ballad at the world’s biggest music competition and was “pumped” to be chosen to represent Australia to compete for the very first time in the 60 years of Eurovision.
The announcement was made at a glamorous event at the Sydney Opera House this morning, attended by a packed media contingent.
Fellow former Idol contestant Jessica Mauboy’s stellar performance of ‘Sea Of Flags‘ at last year’s Eurovision finale paved the way for us to finally muscle our way into the iconic Europe-only event.
It will not be the first time the singer-songwriter has represented Australia on an international scale. After winning the popular talent series Australian Idol in 2003 (“go the fro!”), Sebastian went on to represent Australia at World Idol – a one-off international version of the show that took place in the United Kingdom.
Last year, Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst, popularly known as “the bearded lady”, took out the Eurovision title. This year will mark the 60th anniversary of the iconic competition.
The choice for Australian representative has not been met without negativity of course, and within moments of the announcement, Sebastian began to trend worldwide on Twitter – although the reaction on social media hasn’t been overly positive.
An overwhelming number of fans expressed their disappointment, cracking jokes about the artist and pointing out his lacklustre performance at World Idol.
Most likely, however, the decision has left Shannon Noll thinking ‘What About Me?’
The 2015 Eurovision Song Contest will take place on the 19th, 21rd and 23rd of May and will be broadcast here at home on SBS. Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang will host the coverage.
