Records hold a very special place in the hearts of listeners, especially musicians. Whether it be through the distinct artwork, or a stand-out track, records have the unique ability to instantly take us back to the first time we heard them. We spoke to Melbourne experimental-electronic artist, LANKS (aka Will Cuming), about his experiences and thoughts on some of his favourite records and the influence they’ve had on his life as a musician, and his upcoming EP, Banquet.

Did any albums influence the production or music of Banquet?

There are quite a few that did to be honest. The Acid’s album Liminal and FKA Twigs album of last year were both really inspiring to me production/sound-wise and you can hear hints of those in there, but there were many others and I think that’s why it has a pretty eclectic feel. I also spent a lot of time listening to the last Kendrick record when I was writing the first part of the EP.

What is your favourite album of all time?

That is impossible to answer, but if I had to say one album I suppose I would say Radiohead – Amnesiac, though there are plenty of others that would be right next to it in my top ten or so.

What was the first album you bought with your own money?

The first album I bought with my own money was probably Powderfinger – Odyssey no 5? I know the first single I bought was Britney Spears – Hit Me Baby One More Time, and I’m not even joking.

Which album has influenced your music style the most?

Again a really hard question to answer because I couldn’t put it just down to one album, but two very influential ones for me are The Beatles – Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – it is just so melodic and I’m a sucker for a killer hook. The other one would probably be Radiohead – In Rainbows, just another solid album that also influenced my production style and aesthetic.

What has been the biggest surprise release of 2015?

Life is Better Blonde – Mine. This tune is so good, and he is destined for very big things, trust me.

What was playing on your family stereo growing up?

Brian Eno and The Beatles.

Which album did you play to death as a teenager?

John McLaughlin and The Mahavishnu Orchestra – Birds of Fire.

If you could collaborate on an album with any artist, living or dead, who would it be, and why?

At the moment I’m gonna say Mo. She writes killer vocal melodies and I’d love to do something with her one day.

What was the inspiration behind the cover for Banquet?

Well I think you’d have to ask my designer/illustrator friend, Will Devereux, who created it. The name came from one of my favourite books in the past few years, Neil Perry’s ‘Balance and Harmony’ cook book. I really love that chicken black bean dish (or substitute with tofu for vegeterians).

What was your most memorable moment while recording Banquet?

This EP has been a really drawn out process so there are many, but probably the moment that we finished mixing ‘Hold Me Closer’ and that final chorus dropped, that felt really good. Also, when I first wrote Aurelia (hasn’t been released yet) and my housemate who was always bluntly honest about my work told me that she thought it was a killer track. It didn’t really matter what anyone else thought though to be honest, I really loved that one the moment it came out of me.
