On the back of nine nominations for his latest masterpiece Birdman, Mexican director Alejandro Inarritu is back on set shooting his latest project, The Revenant.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, The Wolf of Wall Street) alongsdie British talents Tom Hardy (Locke, The Drop), Will Poulter (The Maze Runner) , and Domnhall Gleeson (Frank, Unbroken), the film tells the true story of Hugh Glass (DiCaprio), an American fur trapper and frontiersman in the early 1800s.
After being mauled by a grizzly bear and left for dead, Glass made a heroic 200-mile trek back to civilization to find the men who abandoned him in his time of need.
New pictures from the set, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, show a bushy bearded DiCaprio muddied up as Glass.
In one photo (above), he aims a rifle in full action mode, the other, a chat with director Inarritu and a co-star against a menacingly grey sky. The shooting is currently taking place in Calgary, Canada (where the overnight temperature supposedly drops below 10 degrees).
Using only natural light in remote, untouched locations, the production is set to extend until April as Iñárritu and his cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki (Oscar winner for Gravity) can only shoot a few hours each day.
