Having wowed audiences with his Academy Award-winning turn in The Dallas Buyers Club, it seems that chameleon actor Jared Leto isn’t done with dramatic transformations just yet.
The Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman has never been one to shy away from method acting, and lost a staggering 18 kilos to play HIV-positive transgender woman Rayon in the Matthew McConaughey lead 2013 drama.
This year, however, the actor is taking on an iconic role – Batman‘s arch-nemesis The Joker.
The big screen role has been played fervently in the past, most famously by Jack Nicholson in 1989’s Batman, and then by the late Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight in what was probably The Joker’s most terrifying outing.
Suicide Squad is an upcoming film from director David Ayer and follows the exploits of DC Comics anti-heroes. Co-starring the likes of Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne, it is set for a 2016 release, and will ride on the coattails of the equally successful Marvel franchise.
After much casting and aesthetic speculation about Leto’s Joker, Ayer has posted a dramatic first look picture of the actor in full make-up on his Twitter account.
Sporting quotes, that legendary creepy smile and skulls as tattoos, a bare chested Leto looks every bit the hipster Joker. The typical comic book character colours of purple and green are retained in the hair and gloves, and the metallic teeth appears to be a throwback to the iconic Bond villain Jaws.
The cast and crew are currently in the production stages, and Suicide Squad is due for release on August 5, 2016 in The States.
