After releasing three EP’s since 2014, LANKS is about to drop his debut full length, twentyseven. The record details LANKS‘ struggles both in the world of music, and in personal relationships. It follows LANKS as his perspective shifts from solitary and introspective, to an embrace of those around him. The gorgeous, soulful album has dropped today, and LANKS took us behind the record, to shed some light on how it came to be.

1. How does the album making process begin for you?
With an itunes playlist filled with old demos usually. I try to grab things that i felt had potential and having something there takes the pressure off me because i trick myself into thinking it’s almost done. Most of those demos never make the final record anyway.

2. Do you write the music or the lyrics first?
Both? Sometimes it’s one way and other times the other. Often at the same time actually.

3. What time of day do you prefer to write music? When are you most creative?
Mostly early mornings. I’m a morning person. Occasionally I seem to love late nights too. Basically the only time I find more challenging is just after lunch when I ate too much.

4. What challenges did you face while making the album?
Making something I deemed good! It’s really hard to silence that part of your brain and just create freely. But when it’s working and you’re focused nothing else is happening in your head except the creative process, and that’s when you make your best work i think.

5. Who was the first person you played the album to in its entirety?
I think Will Devereux, my best friend who does my design work also. We were making breakfast and listened to it the whole way through. The songs were still kinda demos but it’s the first time you could see and hear what the album was growing into as an entire piece.

6. Describe the album in three words.
Intricate, personal, diverse.
