As the 87th Academy Awards unfolded, backstage was a place for nerves, prayers and fashion emergencies.

Hollywood’s classy Dolby Theatre played host to the biggest night in the film industry calendar, and behind the red velvet curtains, hosts and winners were full of congratulations.

“Big wins tonight, brother!” John Legend said to Alejandro G. Inarritu, after the Birdman director accepted his ‘Best Picture’ award. Inarritu lingered backstage clutching his Oscar between his leading ladies Emma Stone and Andrea Riseborough. “I look good between beauty!” Inarritu said with a smile.

“That was such a beautiful speech,” presenter Cate Blanchett said to Julianne Moore, who had just she accepted her ‘Best Actress’ Oscar.“Was it? Thank you,” Moore said, clutching her chest.

Moments before the show, it was so quiet backstage all you could hear was the swish of Lupita Nyong’o‘s gown as she walked to the greenroom. Show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron stood beside the monitors in the stage right wings, receiving kisses and praise.

Winners ducked in and out between presenters, complimenting each other along the way…
