Another year, another SXSW. Another conversion of Austin, Texas into a party metropolis. Another bunch of Australians cross the Pacific Ocean to play upwards of ten shows in one week in car parks, tents and Texan burger joints. And of course, another lineup is announced.

The announcement for the 2015 festival, which will be held between the 17th and the 22nd of March, carries some surprises this year — particularly in its Australian inclusions. While announced acts like Courtney Barnett (Goddess of the festival circuit) and Ball Park Music come as a shock to few, the rest of them will reveal to you things you either forgot long ago or didn’t know at all. I’m talking reunions, obscurities, and record deals. Here’s a quick list:

Angus & Julia Stone are still a thing

The brother and sister duo have broken up and reformed more than once before, but it would seem that this time, their Rick Ruben-induced reunion is at least a little bit more permanent than those in the past. Despite playing at this year’s Splendour In The Grass, touring the country and releasing their self-titled third album; after years of hiatus it’s still too easy to forget that they’re a thing.

Bloods

Newtown returns to SXSW — this one isn’t a surprise.

The Church return

The Sydney veterans recently played at Bigsound, but few imagined this would morph into an international comeback affair for the 80s pop outfit. They haven’t stopped making music since they started, but this still comes as a pleasant surprise.

Newcastle will be represented

By who else but Gooch Palms! Amongst some of the city’s first mascots at SXSW, the colourful (and oftentimes naked) punk duo will bump the grit up a notch at the 2015 event.

As will Boronia, Melbourne

For those aware of this suburb: you read correctly. Demi Louise will cross the ocean from Boronia to Texas to perform at the festival, having gained traction in Melbourne for her finger-picked, sugary brand of folk pop.

Luluc

The duo and Mistletone Records signatories have had somewhat of a reemergence over the past year, and will deliver their brooding brand of folk to Texans next year in the wake of the release of their recent album Passerby.

Twerps

The Melbourne dolewave extraordinaires will return to SXSW for the second time — but this year things will be different. Twerps were signed back in August to American independent label Merge Records, and prepare to release their third album Range Anxiety shortly before the festival. Exciting times.

But with Australian acts aside, the biggest surprise of all is:

This guy is back.
