George Miller’s Aussie apocalypse epic Mad Max: Fury Road has been crowned the best film of 2015 at the annual AACTA Awards in Sydney overnight.
Australia’s top film and television talent came together to honour Australia’s best screen achievements of the year at the 5th instalment of the awards night held at The Star Event Centre.
Honourable mentions include The Dressmaker, with British acting goddess Kate Winslet named Best Lead Actress and cast mates Judy Davis and Hugo Weaving claiming the Supporting Actor gongs in equally competitive fields. And also to the music biopic miniseries Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door with a handful of wins.
Aussie stalwart Michael Caton was recognised for his poignant performance in Last Cab to Darwin – winning Best Actor – whilst Cate Blanchett tearfully accepted the Longford Lyell Award for an outstanding contribution to Australian screen by actors Richard Roxburgh and Hugo Weaving, with Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard and Robert Redford delivering video messages of congratulation.
