The Australian music industry game is ever-changing. While big record companies are responsible for a lot of the generic stuff you hear on radio – it’s often the small labels that produce some of the best goddamn records you’ll ever hear in your entire life. As the years go by, independent labels seem to be getting bigger and bigger thanks to the likes of music sites and alternative radio stations pushing local unknown artists into the depths of popularity. However, Australian independent labels go beyond the popularity that the likes of Future Classic and Ivy League have attained. There are so many people out there pushing for fresh, local talent – for instance, Silo Arts, Poison City Records, Milk Records, Barely Dressed, and Rice Is Nice – just to name a few.
No, independent labels aren’t on the same playing field as the big guns, but they’ve become a real force to be reckoned with. Often starting out tough in small bedrooms, many Independent Labels are a labour of love – the triumph of sweat, blood, tears, and passion for really good local music.
Independent Labels are the heart of the Australian music industry, and in celebration, Label of Love, in conjunction with the Shadow Electric Bandroom, have announced the return of their shows for 2016.
Label of Love’s shows are a salute to the hardworking individuals behind the scenes of local Australian labels. As such, each show will feature a different label – highlighting both the talented artists and the people in the background dedicated to supporting Australian independent music.
