Adelaide singer/songwriter Jesse Davidson has been making waves in the biz all year with festival performances, Like A Version, his first headline tour and now with the release of new EP ‘Lizard Boy’.
Taking time out of his hectic schedule Jesse Davidson answered a few of our questions about his year and what we can expect from him in the future.
2015 has been a big year for you, performing at Adelaide Laneway and Groovin’ The Moo and now heading out on a national headline tour, what has been the standout gig/experience for you?
Those festivals were probably the coolest gig experiences I’ve had but I’ve had a lot of fun touring smaller venues.
You’ve recently signed with US booking agency The Windish Agency, if you could play any international festival what would it be and why?
Maybe Field Day or Primavera? I don’t really know much about festivals overseas so I’m literally just naming ones that kind of sound pretty big. Coachella? Glastonbury? Just to play anything like that would be incredible.
How did you come to record your new EP ‘Lizard Boy’ at Lightship 95? Is recording on a 550 tonne ship any different from a regular land based studio? Also were the burgers good there?
Yeah I think the main thing I noticed that was different was that later in the day when the tide was up the boat started to rock slightly, which is kind of disorientating when you’re trying to do a take. Other than that it’s pretty sweet, although unfortunately the diner next to the ship was closed for renovations or something when we were there, but there was a pretty sweet café that we went to a lot. Anyway, recording on a boat is sweet but make sure you don’t get nauseous on boats.
You’re a Radelaide local, who are your biggest hometown influences and who in your opinion is killing it at the moment?
I wouldn’t say that I really have any hometown influences but there is some good stuff going around now. Brokers are putting out a new album which I’ve had a listen too and it’s really good. Horror My Friend, Timberwolf, and Bad Dreems are doing good stuff as well. Banjo Jackson also put out a really good album earlier in the year as well which is really nice, good lyrics.
Have you always been musically orientated?
Not always but I started playing drums when I was in Year 4 and starting self teaching myself guitar around Year 7, other than that I had never been super music orientated until I was maybe 13 or 14.
You’ve collaborated with Japanese Wallpaper and Luke Million, who would you love to work with, passed or present and why?
I’d like to have worked with Harry Nilsson before he died. Also if Kanye West or Kendrick Lamar called me up I wouldn’t say no to a feature. If you’re reading this hit me up guys. Also working with Johnny Greenwood would be great, that guy has written some seriously incredible film scores.
What would you be doing if you weren’t making music?
I’d probably be working that 9 to 5 man, that daily grind, selling my soul for the dollar bill.
What’s next for Jesse Davidson in 2016? Can we expect an album in the near future?
I’m not sure if I’ll do an album yet but I’ll definitely be getting back in the studio as soon as possible and start recording again. I’ve already got maybe five or six pretty solid song ideas and I’ll only be doing more over the coming months. I want to go overseas a bit more next year as well.
