Contrary to popular opinion, winter in my eyes is not a miserable season. There’s endless amount of layering to be had; hot drinks are levitated to brand new levels and there’s always something on in Melbourne that will have you skipping around the corners. Indeed, the City of Stonnington have curated yet another winter event that will have you wrapping up; presenting their award-winning Glow Winter Arts Festival.

Running from 11-21 August, the Glow event will embrace the warmth of strong and passionate artistic talent. Set to create an ethos of a public playground, the event will invite viewers to explore the public city after dark – expect diverse showcases, contemporary entertainment and incredible, core-warming food. From stand-up comedy, curated cinema, sensory light shows, roving performances, live music and a plentiful of food choices, Glow will make for the perfect post-work pick-up: it’s only aim to liven the community. Touching everything from intimate spaces, public locations and local venues, events will be both free and ticketed depending on the bill, however, coordinators have made this process easy on both their website and the event’s five core streams: Flicks ‘n’ Feasts, Glow Comedy Club, Arts Burst, Greville Projections and a very exciting new installation that will be announced closer to the festival start. (Gulp!)

To give a little background, Flicks ‘n’ Feasts has become a staple on the Glow line-up, bringing four nights of themed free open-air cinema to Market Lane (next to Prahran Market). Delicious offerings from Melbourne’s favourite food vans will be themed to match screenings of popular cult films such as Gremlins (1984), Labyrinth (1986), Roman Holiday (1953), and BMX Bandits (1983). Blankets will be available for hire for those seeking the ultimate cosy experience – and nope, I did not type that out wrong, because blankets will be at your call. On top of this, the popular Glow Comedy Club will return this year with a keen line-up, albeit very hush-hush right now; and Arts Burst, Greville Projects and more will lay laden to a vibrant and eclectic display of visually striking performances and projections.
Cementing a place on the Melbourne arts and cultural calendar, the Glow Winter Arts Festival invites people young and old to enjoy Stonnington in a different light.
