After an awesome startup season at MICF that saw him receive the 2015 Best Newcomer Award, Sydney-based comedian Sam Campbell is performing his award-winning show in a one-off Sydney show this Weekend! Performing on Saturday (June 6), we sat down with Sam to chat to him about his new show ‘Cambo’s on Top’, being drunk and his comedy beginnings.

When was your first ever comedy gig?
It was in Brisbane. I think I wore a red t-shirt. I talked about falling in love with a bus driver woman and staring longingly at her beautiful knobbly knees.

What is ‘Cambo’s On Top’ about?
Life, prawns, necks, love, going on a boat. It’s funny.

What was the first ever comedy show you saw?
I went to watch a comedy night in Tasmania with my estranged father as a young teen. The host kept talking to me and asked me if I’d ever spoofed in some curtains. It was very humiliating. There was also a lady on the bill who read a bush-poem about a pig.

What’s the best audience reaction you’ve had during a show?
I didn’t drink alcohol for 9 months in 2013 then had eight beers at the comedy store and died horribly, very very bad. When I was walking home I ran into a tree and some blood came out of my forehead then I vomited next to my bed. I went back the next night determined to have good show and had a hot daddy. I don’t know if it was my best one but I felt powers of redemption.

Where’s the best place you’ve ever performed?
Gee Whiz I’d have to say the old Comedy Store 😉 Also Café Lounge in Surry Hills is a good dojo for coming up with new bits.

What was it like being part of this year’s MICF?
Lonely but I learnt many secrets.

Who are your comedy idols?
I enjoy the stylings of Lano and Woodley and Bill Hicks and my childhood friend Stipe Drinovac.

Where do you get your comedic inspiration?
That is actually private information!!!

What have you got planned for the rest of 2015?
I would like to go to Croatia and get better at self-actualization and compartmentalizing. Thank you for interviewing me GAGFILES you do God’s work you really do.
