Haven’t been to a Jazz Party?
Well, it’s a Monday night New Orleans style party with no sound guys, no lighting, no stages, no cover charge…
Jazz Party invites all different walks of people, and moves between different bars across the city for a month-long residencies, lugging a piano up gutters and cramming a band into all sorts of situations, playing rock and roll with a rhythm and blues approach, jazz, country and soul music.
With the end of their latest residency in the front bar of Yah Yah’s upon us (Monday 28 November), we asked Kiddo and Darcy from Jazz Party to share some of their favourite tunes that you are likely to hear at the party!
KIDDO
1. Professor Long Hair – Big Chief pts 1 & 2
The original and the best, the most danceable, sickest vibe, absolute party starter.
DARCY
2. Big Mama Thornton – I Smell A Rat
This is the closest a song gets to the movie “The Departed” It’s a brutal 2 minutes and 40 seconds of New Orleans blues. Big M gives zero fucks whether the band can keep up with her and when she says she’s getting out the rat poison I get scared…
DARCY
3. Dr John – Tipitina (On Japanese TV)
A standard from my favourite New Orleans pianist, Dr John. An all time great song and performance. Dr John seems hungover/stoned, his voice is gravel and he looks like he’s painfully trying to stay awake but the big hands are steady and flowing like ballerinas over the keys.
DARCY
4. Fats Waller – Dem Dry Bones
Fats is just my hero.
KIDDO
5. Koko Taylor – Voodoo Woman
If you can’t move to this your soul is broken. Horns & grooves. Power, sex and voodoo. What more do you need?
KIDDOS
6. The Falcons featuring Wilson Pickett – I Found Love
This is a JP anthem, Darcy played it to me and said I want you to sing it, I said “NO WAY it’s too huge for me!” but he made me and now we do it pretty much every week if my voice holds out. Wild, unrestrained scream along, pure joy in a song. The perfect end to the best party.
This is not a Monday night to stay at home! Join Jazz Party, DJ Chinabone and special guests for their final Monday night residency at Yah Yahs on Monday 28 November.
