Coming into its 15th year, music festival and industry conference BIGSOUND has a powerhouse lineup of new artists and guest speakers. Set in Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, the 3-day event runs from the 7th to the 9th of September. Looking back, the importance of BIGSOUND in the Australian music scene has become paramount. Celebrating local talent, educating those new and old to the industry and networking are only some of the reasons BIGSOUND is vital in the growth of the Australian music industry.
In the past, being a part of BIGSOUND can be the tipping point for an artist’s career. Performing as part of the showcase has opened many opportunities for artists in the past. Take Slum Sociable, for example, one year BIGSOUND, the next Great Escape Festival in the UK followed by a series of shows in Europe. This year’s dazzling line-up consists of pure Australian talent, making the biggest sound of all. These fine artists include MOSSY, Ainslie Wills, Tash Sultana, Sampa the Great and many more.
MOSSY: Brought to the attention of many with his debut self-titled EP, the unusual vocals and dreamy instrumentals of MOSSY deserve to be noticed.
Tash Sultana: Out of nowhere this Melbournian beauty has been RAISIN hands and filling hearts with her slow-burners with sold out shows across the country.
Sampa the Great: A blend of hip-hop and reggae. Beautiful beats are met with powerful lyrics to encapsulate everything that is Sampa the Great.
Tiny Little Houses: The soundtrack the 2016 sad boy aesthetic, Tiny Little Houses will pull on your heart strings with their lo-fi, noisy sound.
As a conference, BIGSOUND can be a plethora of information and possible networks for artist managers and those alike. The expression ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’ could well and truly been created around the music industry. Managers are able to learn from the guest speakers, sharing their knowledge and experience. This year, attendees of BIGSOUND will be educated by local speakers but the likes of Jaddan Comerford of UNIFIED and the question master himself, Lindsay ‘The Doctor’ McDougall. By incorporating guest speakers from overseas, BIGSOUND helps to bridge the gap between the Australian and International music market. Below is a short list of delegates who can make it happen overseas.
SEBASTIAN FREED– ‘Talent Buyer’ for The Bowery Presents (USA). This New Yorker has been booking talent since 2011, working mainly with venues such as Mercury Lounge, Terminal 5 and Town Hall.
DEAN ORMSTON – ‘Music Segment Producer’ for Conan (USA). The man responsible for an abundance of artists making their TV debut on late night talk shows, including Tame Impala, Courtney Barnett, Kendrick Lamar and much more.
TAYLOR TESTA – ‘A&R’ at Universal Music Publishing Group (USA). This heavily experienced lady knows talent when she sees it, having a hand in the success of Shlohmo and other unique talents.
