‘Witness’ is the first taste of Benjamin Booker‘s sophomore album of the same name. It is the result of Booker‘s journey into the depths of Soul, R&B and Blues music; and the strengthening of his passion for speaking out against the social pressures of our time.
What started as a month-long trip to Mexico (in order to break down the wall of writer’s block) turned into a revelation of the necessity to confront the realities of life; especially the negative ones. The New Orleans native has experienced first hand his fair share of racism, but would admit that even he has had it much easier than others. It was during his Mexican getaway that Booker realized that while one can escape to another country and attempt to forget about the negative weight of social issues, you’ll eventually have to confront the problem head on. In the words of Booker himself, “Witness to whence I came, where I am. Witness to what I’ve seen and the possibilities that I think I see. . . .”
‘Witness’ is a social anthem that is infused with the great music of the American South – Gospel, Soul the Blues. Gospel singing legend Mavis Staples even lends her vocal skills to the track, creating a choir-like background for the track.
Benjamin Booker’s second LP Witness is out 2nd June via Rough Trade/Remote Control Records.
