It is very rare to hear an emerging artist whose voice commands as much attention as Merpire. ‘Holding Breath’ is a fully realised vision which bursts with personality and charm, serving as a glimpse into the mind of a young artist with the world ahead of her. Taken from her forthcoming EP due later in the year, ‘Holding Breath’ is a riveting, cinematic, and utterly spellbinding number which meticulously blends electronic and acoustic elements.
‘Holding Breath’ is a call to arms for all those who have suffered in the throes of a broken heart. Produced by Andy Bull and engineered and mixed by ARIA award-winning engineer Paul McKercher, ‘Holding Breath’ carries a moving, and immense power. Merpire has said that “when I write songs, I like to think of them as mini movies. ‘Holding Breath‘ is both an insight into my introspection, and a violent exaggeration of what it can feel like to look for love in the same place you were hurt.”
The pitch bending violins serve as a musical highlight in the track, evoking a grandiose atmosphere without pretension. Merpire has said that this choice was designed to match the “ups and downs of the emotional process” associated with the lyrical subject matter of the song. Haunting, simmering, and absolutely beautiful, ‘Holding Breath’ is a certain indication of good things to come from this rising talent.
