After she dropped her single ‘Low Blows’ almost a month ago, 2014 Triple J Unearthed Artist of The Year MEG MAC has announced her debut album of the same name will be released on July 14. The pop-soul singer will also tour the record around Melbourne and Sydney, giving fans a great opportunity to see her back home after crafting most of the album in America.
Her main goal for the record was to make it “feel like I was just singing in the room to you” with the final vocals on every song live and unedited. This is incredibly rare for a pop artist in a market where everything is usually recorded and edited ‘perfectly’. She explains, “it is hard to leave mistakes on a record but I think it was important to do that”. Judging by the quality of the single, she has incredible vocal talent with her ‘mistakes’ unrecognisable and this bold choice no doubt gives the recording more of an organic feeling, similar to Hozier‘s ‘Take Me To Church’ which was recorded in the same way.
Her vocal style is influenced by soul stars Ray Charles, Nina Simone and Otis Redding which are combined with her songwriting heroes Bob Dylan and Bon Iver. This isn’t too clear on her single which is more of an indie-pop tune, but you can expect more of an acoustic soul blend to be apparent throughout the rest of the album.
You can catch MEG MAC in Melbourne at The Forum on September 8th and in Sydney at The Enmore Theatre on September 22nd. Tickets are available on a Spotify Pre-Sale until Thursday 27th of April at 1:00pm HERE and are made available to the general public at 9:00am on Friday HERE.
