With the closing of the prestigious Bennett’s Lane Jazz Club in early February, there was a lot of speculation about the future of the jazz community here in Melbourne However, its worth mentioning that the Bennett’s Lane Jazz Club will actually re-open in a brand new venue on Flinders Lane (with the opening date to be announced later in the year). There is also a second bit of good news…
Michael Tortoni (the founder of the Bennett’s Lane Jazz Club) has been hard at work developing a brand new jazz club on Leslie St in Brunswick. The rumours of this new jazz club have been in circulation for a while, but now its offical! The Jazzlab will open its doors for the very first time on April 7.
The Jazzlab’s schedule is already looking busy: pianist Hue Blanes will launch his second solo album Holidays on April 15, Paris-based Aussie guitarist Daniel Hunter and his quartet will take to the stage on April 9, and local jazzers The Rookies will play a midnight set every Saturday and Sunday morning in April.
It’d also be rude to not mention the fact that The Jazzlab will be hosting a swathe of impressive acts during the 2017 Melbourne International Jazz Festival in June.
