Here are 5 Melbourne acts that you may know of, you may not, that’s not the point. The point is that these groups are bloody good, and their music is a great addition to anyone’s summer playlist:

Vaudeville Smash

Lively vibes is what this band is all about. Vaudeville Smash have a sound which is evidently founded on the funk of Prince and the joyful synth-pop of New Order; while at the same time making a nod to the glam rock of the early 80’s (think of Europe). Their ridiculous lyrics, and amusing atmosphere are perfect for seeing the summer out.

Man Made Mountain

Man Made Mountain is the collaborative project between rapper Cazeaux O.S.L.O. and ARIA Award winning producer Billy Hoyle. They are an active force in the Melbourne Hip Hop scene, and join a small yet special group of MC’s and Producers who are bringing back the 90’s Hip Hop sound of J Dilla, Madlib and Pete Rock.

dxHEAVEN

This is ideal for those who are looking for that fresh 80’s pop sound. The lush synth, the fat bass, and the linear, displaced funk grooves create a unique amalgamation. If your a fan of M83, Client Liason, or Phoenix, then give dxHEAVEN a whirl.

S I L E N T J A Y

Silentjay is a producer, singer, multi-instrumentalist who has already crossed paths with the likes of Thundercat and Flying Lotus. His most recent release, Come Fly With Me (The Wraptape) came out last September. This is a beat tape full of quirky, lo-fi, drunk hip hop instrumentals that would fit nicely alongside your favorite Brainfeeder or Stones Throw Records releases. This is another one for the hip hop fanatics in Melbourne.

Haarlo

Originally from Wellington, NZ, Haarlo have crafted their own sonic niche in the Melbourne music scene. This soul tinged, beat driven, electronic duo have a sound that is reminiscent of the melodic yet melancholy mood of The XX, a catchy yet anthemic chorus of Highasakite, and a deep yet sparse atmosphere of James Blake.
