Simon Winkler of RRR might just have the coolest job in the world. Day to day, he spends his time sifting through music and working to expose artists to a wider community of listeners through the platform of community radio. Whilst presenting Breaking & Entering, he also serves as RRR‘s music coordinator – a coveted position that was formerly filled by Geoff King. We had a sit-down chat with both Simon and Geoff not long ago to talk about the station’s induction into The Age Music Victoria hall of fame, where we learned a lot about the history of the station and the way that it has evolved over its 40 years of existence.
Simon took us inside the RRR music library, showed us around the station and contributed some of his thoughts on music streaming, a topic we had the privilege of discussing with industry figures Zac Abroms and Vader Fame recently. He also told us more about his role at RRR, and the day to day functionality of the diverse and iconic pillar of the Melbourne music scene. Having existed for four decades, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for RRR and having survived financial strife countless times, it’s easy to forget how lucky we are to still have RRR in our lives. For both fans and artists, having a tentpole like RRR in existence is vitality important, the relevance of which cannot be understated.
