As the long summer hours of the night burn into the next, The National Gallery Of Victoria are busy curating a handful of events to settle down all artistic busybodies throughout the warmest days. Extending their hours from 10am to 8pm – alongside The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia from 10am to 5pm – there’s something of interest to everyone in this iconic space.
Currently making waves in the art world, NGV are currently housing their most ambitious exhibition yet as they take on Andy Warhol – Ai Wei Wei; alongside thought-provoking and beautiful Richard Moss: The Enclave, Blue: Alchemy Of Colour and many more. Kids Summer Festival | 16th – 26th Jan
Returning after popular demand, the free 11-day Kids Summer Festival is decorating January with kittens in the Great Hall, Warhol-era ’60s hairstyles and giant paper murals. Created in collaboration with Meet Me at Mike’s crafter Pip Lincolne and more, don’t miss the chance to get messy and DIY at the Ian Potter Centre.
American No-Wave Icon James Chance | 15th Jan
Combining the hefty funk chords of James Brown and the freeform playing of legendary jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman, American No-Wave icon James Chance will perform in Australia for the very first time at Friday Nights at NGV. As punk collides with jazz, blues and funk, James Chance & The Contortions are set to react; proving their catalysts Talking Heads and Chuck Berry why the underground began to burn. Jenny Hval’s Spacious Soul | 22nd Jan
Norwegian singer Jenny Hval’s has a knack for creating pop music that’s melodic and spacious. Her lyrics are poetic, sensual and challenging, throwing into question everything we know about gender and sexuality, body and soul. Woven a career out of literature and music, Hval was a one-time Melbourne resident studying Creative Writing at the University of Melbourne and provided backing vocals for Melbourne folk singer Laura Jean on her 2014 self-titled album. Hval will perform at Friday Nights at NGV, NGV International. Admission fees apply.
Bush Food With Cassie Leatham @ NGV Garden | 23rd Jan
Learn about the nutritious food you can discover in the Australian bush with Indigenous artist and artefact maker Cassie Leatham Harrap. In a special presentation, Leatham will be discussing and exploring the natural wonders of the Australian bush in the NGV Garden, NGV International. FREE.
The Unconventional Design Of Alexander McQueen | 14th Jan
Discover the unconventional design, beauty and savage tailoring of British powerhouse designer Alexander McQueen through a curator presentation about one of the NGV’s recent acquisitions, a cocktail dress from his 1997 collection for Givenchy. This is one of a series of curator talks during the extended opening hours at NGV International in January, NGV International. FREE.
