Community TV legends who bought you ‘Lessons with Luis’ and ‘Fishcam’ present Song Off; a show where Frivalry, songs about cats and hilarious antics combine. We caught up with creators and performers Luis and Madeleine ahead of their shows at The Workers Club to chat about Song Off, what musical instrument they’d be and more:
How did you come up with Song Off?
LUIS
Throughout the years as talented performers, Madeleine and I have made lots of musical number one hits and we have missed performing them outside of our bedrooms to an audience. We also had a fight one day.
MADELEINE
Luis and I were arguing loudly about whose songs have the best costumes and the most props and the biggest commitment to an idea, and we need to find out once and for all!
How do you decide on the songs you choose battle against?
LUIS
Well, I go back and look through my long library of songs and I choose the cat songs I have made. They are the most catchiest songs I have. Almost all of my songs are about cats.
MADELEINE
Whichever songs are the longest and pointiest. Or hardest and most throwable. Also the songs which are the most entertaining and maximum-fun.
If you had to describe yourself as a musical instrument, what would it be and why?
LUIS
The kazoo. It is a fun and happy instrument. My little brother would be a saxophone because of sensual reasons and Madeleine is a trumpet. I don’t like trumpets.
MADELEINE
A trumpet because I fart a lot and the farts make lots of different notes. Unfortunately I won’t be farting at our concert. Luis said I’m not allowed to.
If you could choose anybody to do a song-off with, who would it be and why?
LUIS
Michael Jackson. Because I think I am as talented as he is and could show him a trick or two. I also have my own version of the moonwalk but it is much easier so everyone can do it at home. It is basically walking backwards.
MADELEINE
The person I would choose would be Luis because we are rivals and friends. Frivals.
What’s your favourite Karaoke song?
LUIS
‘I’m Blue’ by Aqua. When I sing it I replace all the ‘blue’ words with ‘cat’ and I enjoy it a lot more.
MADELEINE
The ‘Neighbours’ theme song because it really resonates with me because I live in a street.
How has ‘Fishcam’ influenced your comedy style?
LUIS
Fishcam taught me to never have fish in a comedy show ever again. People keep asking me about Fishcam but I just can’t put it in my stage shows. Fish cannot survive outside of the water. They need it to breathe.
MADELEINE
Fishcam taught me that Luis doesn’t like to be touched, but you can still try to touch him but he might get angry.
Is this your first time performing at the Workers club? What is it that you like about the venue?
LUIS
This is my second time. I supported Madeleine’s ‘The Burnt Sausages’ band there and really like the space. There’s plenty of room for confetti-throwing, star jumps and places to rap. Rappers need to use the space. They don’t just stand still and sing into a microphone like Celine Dion.
MADELEINE
This show at the Workers Club will be the first time Luis and I perform in a Real Music Venue! We’re hoping it will be our big break in The Music Industry. This venue has everything: A stage. Lights. A top location on the corner of Brunswick and Gertrude Streets. Nachos. A pinball machine. And singing. Lots of singing.
What can audiences expect from Song-Off?
LUIS AND MADELEINE
