Supersense will be running in Melbourne between the 18th and 20th of August 2017. As part of this thought and sense-provoking experience, there will a festival within a festival taking place.

Overground is a collaborative work presented by Supersense, Liquid Architecture and the NOW now. Originally beginning during the Melbourne International Jazz Festival in 2010 and 2011, Overground is now returning for 2017 at Supersense.

The experience will take place at the Arts Centre Melbourne, and is a four hour collaborative experiment held in various lounges, foyers, halls, and stalls throughout the opulent building. Overground features Australian and international musicians and artists who will demonstrate free improvisation, performance art, jazz, poetry, comedy and much more.

This sensory experience includes almost 50 artists, who will be organised into groups and ensembles that have never previously worked together. The performances rely heavily on improvisation, meaning there will be a fleeting, ephemeral quality to the resulting works. The point of Overground is to utilise risk and uncertainty to creative an innovative and evocative experience.

Overground is a collaboration by Supersense director, Sophia Brous, Liquid Architecture‘s Joel Stern and founding director of Sydney’s legendary NOW now organisation Clayton Thomas.

The ‘festival within a festival’ promises to evoke its audience’s senses, and redefine how sound and improvisation have traditionally been viewed.

Liquid Architecture is an Australian organisation for artists working with sound, who communicate ideas and investigate the meaning of sonic extremes.
