Returning on the 13th of August for 2018, TEDxMelbourne is back to explore ideas and engage conversations through thought-provoking talks. Speakers will tackle this year’s topic ‘The Great Unknown’ as they dive into themes of who we’ve been and what we’ll become.

This year’s line-up features a wide range of local speakers comprising of authors, scientists, researchers, academics and more. Among the line-up is Astronomer, Professor, TV Presenter and Author, Dr Lisa Harvey-Smith who will share her thoughts on why the stars are our past and our future. Archaeologist Dr Ronika Power, will also be holding a discussion about the taboos of death in our culture and the everyday unknowns that we all face.

This year’s event will feature a new option for guests to attend either a morning session, an afternoon session or immerse themselves in a whole day experience. There is also a new venue for this year’s event as they take over The Meat Market in North Melbourne.

Each event session this year will feature different speakers as they discuss an array of topics such as the possibility of designer immortality, AI’s ability to make human centric ethical decisions, the world of cults and freedom, and the role of memory in a world of AI and big data.

In addition to the series of talks, there will be performances from violinist Justin Bailey and a pop in from Chess Grand Master, James Morris. The adventure will also continue at a TEDxMelbourne after party with the event crew for those who wish to explore even further.
