Peeping out from behind local market stalls and studios around the country are Australia’s many makers and creators. We spoke to Alec Kach, creative director of Melbourne design company Mi Goals about burgers, Kanye and getting shit done.

What are your earliest memories of art and design?

I have always been creative since I was super young; my earliest memory was probably in primary school when I would make my exercise books look kooler than all the regular kids and draw Ninja Turtles everywhere.

Goal setting seems to be a big part of Mi Goals. How important is it to know what you want and how to get it?

Yeah it’s our core product, but what we want to do is educate and make the overwhelming aspect of having goals and accomplishing them become simple. Everyone has wants so it’s just about prioritizing which ones are more important for the NOW and working towards that. Most of the smaller milestones should mean that you are accomplishing mini goals that eventually have an overall effect on the main vision. And overall our message and manifesto is about getting shit done, or else you will have heaps of dreams and no real outcomes.

What advice do you have for anyone trying to establish a brand and make a living in the creative industries?

If you have an idea, JUST DO IT. It doesn’t have to be perfect the first time it just needs to be out there. These days it’s so easy to start things and get funding with the likes of Kickstarter and Pozible so there’s no excuses. Everything takes time, so the time you take thinking about it and getting it perfect will allow someone will else to do it. It depends how much you want it.

Where do you find your artists? How would someone get involved with Mi Goals?

I find them on Instagram and also through my creative network. Also we have this thing at Mi Goals ‘if you don’t ask you don’t get’. But we have been lucky and had responses even from some big designer it’s more about how we can collaborate now.

What inspires you outside of design?

I would say food, I’m a bit of a closet foodie. LOVE burgers.

What are some of the ideas you’ve had that didn’t quite make the cut?

As a designer many great ideas are lost in client / designer dealings, so I would say too many to pick just one one that stands out.

What’s your design process?

I’m constantly researching trends, like I love sneakers so some of the products are inspired by fashion trends and a sneaker I love. I know this may sound weird but it totally works in my head lol.
We would then work on developing a new style for the season, followed by some sort of testing. We are constantly trying to simplify how our products are used so the testing part has been crucial in recent ranges.

Who do you hope to collaborate with in the future?

Kanye West, Acne, Rocky Balboa.

You’ve said Mi Goals is more than a stationary brand. What are your goals for Mi Goals?

We want to inspire the world and stationary is only one aspect of us doing that, the next big thing would have to do with fashion, workshops and tech. Exciting new goals ahead, but again what comes with that is HARD WORK. So we gotta GET SHIT DONE.
